NEWS RELEASE: U.S. Postal Service begins delivering ballots today, May 1, 2024, for the May Primary Election

Multnomah County, Ore. — The U.S. Postal Service began delivering ballots today, Wednesday, May 1, for the upcoming May 21, 2024, Primary Election.

Multnomah County voters who do not receive a ballot by Thursday, May 9, should call Multnomah County Elections at 503-988-VOTE. 

To be counted, voted ballots must be received by 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, at any county elections office in Oregon or at any Official Ballot Drop Site location. Ballots can also be postmarked by May 21 to be counted. 

Voters in Multnomah County can sign up for the Track Your Ballot service at multnomah.ballottrax.net to know when their ballot is on its way. Multnomah County Elections’ Track Your Ballot service is available in multiple languages. Voters can choose to receive ballot tracking alerts and updates in English, Spanish, Russian, Somali, Ukrainian, Vietnamese or Chinese. Alerts also indicate whether the ballot has been accepted for counting or whether it requires further action by the voter. Voters can get a virtual “I Voted” sticker after they return their ballot. 

Reminder: This year’s primary election ballot will look different

Candidate contests for City of Portland elected offices will not appear on the May 2024 ballot. These contests will appear on the Nov. 5, 2024, ballot, which will also be the City's first use of ranked choice voting. Return your ballot  

You can return your ballot to any Official Ballot Drop Site. Return your ballot to any 24-hour Official Ballot Drop Site in the state or to any 24-hour Multnomah County Library Drop Site. All 30 Multnomah County Official Ballot Drop Sites are listed below and at multco.us/dropsites. Voted ballots must be received at any county elections office in Oregon or Official Ballot Drop Site location by 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

You can also choose to return your ballot by mail, no stamp necessary. Thanks to the passage of House Bill 3291 in 2021, also known as the “postmarks” bill, ballots that are in the mail and postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on Election Day will be counted.

Multnomah County has 30 Official Ballot Drop Sites available now until 8 p.m. on Election Day where you can return your ballot. Official Ballot Drop Sites include most Multnomah County Library locations. Ballots are picked up from library locations and Official Ballot Drop Boxes on a regular schedule. Voting Center Express now open through Election Day 

The Multnomah County Duniway-Lovejoy Elections Building is at 1040 S.E. Morrison St. in Portland. There is limited street parking, but this location is near TriMet bus routes 15 and 70. 

The Voting Center Express, inside the Multnomah County East Building, is at 600 N.E. 8th St. in Gresham.

The Voting Center Express is a closer service location for more than 165,000 Multnomah County voters who live east of Interstate 205. Parking is free. The Voting Center Express is also located near the TriMet Gresham Central Transit Center MAX Station.

Multnomah County Elections’ normal hours at both voter service locations are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
