County leaders sign beam of new East County Courts facility

July 27, 2011

Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen donned a hardhat and joined county leaders and construction crews at the site of the new East County Courts building in Gresham’s Rockwood neighborhood.

Commissioner Diane McKeel, District Attorney Michael Schrunk, Sheriff Dan Staton and the chair gathered to celebrate the progress of the project and sign one of the courthouse's beams.

The new facility will replace Gresham's overcrowded one-courtroom facility on West Powell. After construction is completed, Gresham residents will no longer have to travel to the crowded downtown Portland courthouse for misdemeanors, traffic violations and ex parte hearings.

The courts building will meet LEED Gold Certification standards for sustainable construction and the Architecture 2030 Challenge, which calls for construction of facilities that use little or no fossil fuels.

The construction East County Courts represents decades of work and planning for a courthouse in the underserved East Multnomah County. Officials expect the project will open in the spring of 2012.
