Updated with new deadline: Oregon Historical Society oversight body needs members

November 15, 2010

In the recent general election, Multnomah County voters approved a measure that will support the Oregon Historical Society and allow it to remain open to the public. Measure 26-118 creates a five-year local option levy of $.05 per $1,000 assessed property value to benefit the Oregon Historical Society, which preserves and displays Oregon’s collection of historical documents, photos, and other artifacts. This funding will enable restoration of the Oregon History Library and Museum’s hours, as well as provide free admission for all schoolchildren and residents of Multnomah County.

The measure requires Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen to assemble an independent citizen oversight committee that will be responsible for reviewing all expenditures related to the levy and for making sure the funds are used for their intended purpose. The committee, which will represent the diversity within Multnomah County’s various communities, will review the Oregon Historical Society’s allocation of funds.

Citizens interested in serving on this committee should send a resume and an explanation of qualifications to the Office of Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen. Candidates for the committee should possess the following attributes:

  • Commitment to process related to accountability of levy funds
  • Experience and/or sufficient understanding of budgeting processes

Submit materials by December 13 at 5 p.m. to:
