August 5, 2014

U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer and Multnomah County Health Department staff will be honored Wednesday, Aug. 6, in Portland for their work to build healthier communities.

The Oregon Primary Care Association (OPCA) will present Congressman Blumenauer with the 2014 Distinguished Community Health Advocate Award at the Old Town Recovery Center at 3:45 p.m. The award, given on behalf of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), recognizes the Congressman’s outstanding advocacy and work for community health centers.“Congressman Blumenauer has worked tirelessly to support high-quality, cost-effective health care for Portland’s underserved,” said OPCA Policy Director John Hummel.  “His leadership in Congress is inspiring and impactful.”

The Oregon Primary Care Association will also honor Multnomah County outreach and enrollment specialists who helped more than 15,000 residents sign up for health insurance.

“This team crisscrossed the county and worked long hours to reach people who did not have insurance through their work or could never afford insurance before,’’ said Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury. “This goes beyond just helping individuals. Our entire county is healthier when more people can connect to prevention and health services.”

The event is part of National Health Center Week Aug. 10-16 to celebrate the contributions of community, migrant, homeless and public housing health centers in providing access to affordable, high quality, cost-effective health care to medically vulnerable and underserved people.
