President Obama has shown we need to directly address the serious problems facing our country. Yet, the Portland School Board continues to dance around many of the most critical issues facing Portland's schools. As a forty-year school teacher and someone who has paid close attention to PPS since 1974, Steve Buel has the background, the knowledge and the independence to lead the charge in attacking the serious problems facing Portland 's schools and children.
Some of Steve's Priorities
Make the school board work: Steve will aggressively address the problems.
Support your neighborhood school: Good, solid neighborhood schools are the city's backbone.
Schools, not testing factories: We need a clear definition of education. We need to de-emphasize testing.
Music, the arts, PE, libraries, and technology are not “extras”
The Drop-out Problem: Schools need to better engage students. We need real equity among all schools.
Vocational Education: Return Benson Tech to prominence. Fund it properly. Restore the application process.
Use common sense in decisions: Bring back recess. Return Jefferson to a solid comprehensive high school. Carefully involve the community in decisions.
Improve discipline: Hold students accountable. Create better disciplinary procedures. Support teachers better.
Treat teachers with more respect: Hire earlier. Increase teacher involvement in decision making.
Community input: The school board needs to do more than just listen.
Children's special needs: Stronger focus on kids who can't read. Foster creativity through TAG. Improve help for parents of special needs children.
Early childhood education: Support full day kindergarten and Head Start.
Why Steve Now?
PPS faces huge equity problems in the middle of a severe economic downturn. Steve's teaching background and experience makes him uniquely qualified to protect the classroom.
