October 10, 2012 via The Portland Observer-- Leaders from the local African-American community recently gathered at Concordia University in northeast Portland for the Sam and Opal Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund banquet.
In 1981, the Rev. Sam Johnson and his wife Opal Johnson and Wilmar Elliot, established a scholarship fund to honor their vision in providing educational opportunities for those young and old residing in north and northeast Portland.
Since then, scholarship fund has assisted more than 200 students in financial need attend a two-year, four-year or vocational institution.
Through the continued efforts of the Rev. Dr. W. G. Hardy, Jr., senior pastor of the Highland Christian Center, the scholarship continues to grow and benefit students in the wider metro area.
