Commissioner Loretta Smith’s statement on immigration round-ups

February 17, 2017

The Associated Press reported this morning that the Trump Administration considered mobilizing the National Guard to round up undocumented immigrants living in Oregon, including residents of Multnomah County. The White House has since tried to distance itself from documents obtained from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that outline the immigration crackdown. But given President Trump’s hostility toward immigrants, we must take the AP’s discovery seriously.

As a direct service provider, Multnomah County has a duty to serve every member of our community. We do not discriminate based on immigration status.

I am committed to ensuring that Multnomah County remains a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone, and I strongly believe we must stand up the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant agenda. I call on Governor Brown to reject any effort by the Trump Administration to marshal state and local resources to harass and intimidate those whose only offense is residing in our community without authorization.
