Program Description
Facilities and Property Management (FPM) has a strong track record of saving the County money through energy efficiency improvements. By choosing to replace inefficient lighting systems with more efficient versions, FPM is saving the County money and reducing the environmental impact of lighting the County.
Fiscal Sustainability
Since 2001, the County has leveraged over $85,000 in incentives offered through the Energy Trust of Oregon (ETO) for upgrades to inefficient lighting and ballasts. The result of these retrofits has been to reduce the County’s electricity usage by over 700,000 kilo- watt hours, saving the County over $57,000 each year! In addition, upgrades also reduce maintenance costs due to longer life and ease of replacement.
Environmental Sustainability
Energy efficient lighting upgrades reduce the County’s demand on the electric grid, meaning that fewer costly and environmentally damaging generators need to be built. Over half of the energy used in Oregon comes from fossil fuel sources, which results in the destruction of natural lands and the release of CO2 and other toxics like mercury and arsenic.
Social Equity
Multnomah County’s energy efficiency projects are helping to cement the region’s reputation as a leader in sustainable practices and as a hub for clean technology companies and other green businesses.
