Communications Specialist Nicholas Rivas joined the REACH team in March 2016. He’s responsible for highlighting the work the county leads with community partners. Namely, Nicholas has worked on creating a calendar of events to share internally so that community partners and county staff can better network. He will also work on a county smoke-free advertising campaign planned to launch September 2016. Nicholas also splits his time working with tobacco retail licensing outside of REACH where he helped coordinate application building, newsletters and more.
Born and raised in California, Nicholas earned his Bachelor’s degree in communications from California State University, Fullerton then his Master’s degree in Regenerative Studies from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
Between his degrees, Nicholas enrolled in the AmeriCorps VISTA program, which led him to Portland. While there, he worked with the Cascadia Green Building Council, a Northwest Portland firm that advises businesses in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska on environmental practices.
After his year with VISTA, he decided Portland was the place for him. “The work that was happening around the community was really inspiring and I wanted to be a part of it.”
Nicholas says his passion largely comes from seeing missed opportunities in environmental and social justice. “You often see pockets of disparities amongst an otherwise really robust and healthy community and you wonder why that is, that kind of stuff doesn’t happen by accident,” he says.
Looking forward, Nicholas says he’s excited to continue working with REACH. “I want people to be able to go into the places where they feel that they belong,” he says. “And I want them to know that the healthy choices they want to make are supported there.”But, when he’s not working at Multnomah County you can find him rock climbing or cooking risotto with his wife Phoebe and cat Ringo.
