The photograph in the last post is from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office archives and shows a deputy showing two young fellows how to shoot at the Sheriff's Office practice range up on Kelly Butte. Kelly Butte had been the site for an early county jail and also a rock crushing operation. The operation was closed when the Rocky Butte Jail and rock operation opened in 1941.  You can still see it in this 1963 aerial photo posted on the Vintage Portland blog.

Come back again next Tuesday for another epsiode of Dive Into the Archives.
