This week's Dive Into the Archives asked who these clowns were. There's a clue in the picture. Behind the legs of several of the clowns you'll see some letters. Now I know that after seeing this fun bunch, you probably think that it stands for Rad Department. While that is a true description, it is actually the Road Department. Multnomah County has been building and maintaining roads since it was created in 1854.

The clowns in the photo were part of a parade float in the1960  Albany Timber Carnival. Here's a little look at the 1957 Timber Carnival.

County departments often participate in community events as a fun way of engaging with people about what they do. Come back next week to Dive Into the Archives.
