Multnomah County Medical Examiner identifies suspected hypothermia death in January 2024 winter storm

Update: The person died Friday, Jan. 12, in Portland. It was initially reported that the suspected hypothermia death occurred on Saturday, Jan. 13. They were male and were found in zipcode 97232. No other details are being released at this time.

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Program on Saturday, Jan. 13, reported it is investigating one suspected hypothermia death since a state of emergency was declared Jan. 12 amid dangerously cold temperatures and a forecast winter storm.

Investigators say confirmation will not be complete for several weeks to months. 

The person died Friday, Jan. 12, in Portland. They were male and were found in zipcode 97232. No other details are being released at this time.

The death is still considered a suspected case and is under investigation as a potential cold-weather-related death. Further tests and investigation will determine whether the death is officially cold-weather-related. The County will update this information as it becomes available.
