Several downtown streets to close July 12-15 during courthouse crane removal

July 8, 2019

Sections of several downtown streets will be closed July 12-15 during the removal of the construction crane that was used to construct Multnomah County’s new Central Courthouse at SW First and SW Madison Street. The work will also impact eastbound access to the Hawthorne Bridge.

The traffic plan will be in place from 4:30 am Friday until as late as 11 a.m. on Monday.

  • SW Madison Street will be closed from SW Second Avenue to the SW Naito Parkway onramp to the Hawthorne Bridge. Eastbound access to the Hawthorne Bridge for motor vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians will be maintained from northbound SW Naito. From downtown, use SW Columbia Street eastbound, turn left at SW Naito to access Hawthorne Bridge. This will be the eastbound detour route for TriMet buses that use the Hawthorne Bridge.
  • SW First Ave. will be closed from SW Main Street to SW Jefferson Street
  • Westbound access to the Hawthorne Bridge will not be impacted.

The new 17-story Central Courthouse is scheduled to open in late spring 2020. Removal of the tower crane was originally scheduled to occur in late June. It was delayed to develop a plan to avoid damage to underground utilities. For project information, visit /central-courthouse.
