In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of Public Service Recognition Week, Multnomah County hosted its first Employee Awards.
Multnomah County Board of Commissioners hosted the first annual Employee Service Awards on Wednesday, May 5 as part of Public Service Recognition Week. All five commissioners on the board had the chance to present at least one of the seven awards, which included Diversity and Cultural Competency, Employee Innovation, Outstanding Team Achievement, Sustainability, Superior Public Service (internal and external), and the Chair’s Excellence Award.
The awardees were nominated by their peers and members of the community, and ultimately selected on behalf of the County by the Employee Awards Selection Committee. The committee received 55 nominations for over 145 County employees during the nomination period and sorted through them to find candidates who best represented Multnomah County’s public service values.
Chair Jeff Cogen selected the winner of the Chair’s Excellence Award and presented it to the 17 members of the Holgate Library staff. Cogen chose this team of employees because of the support they gave to displaced members of Marysville Elementary School in November 2009. The Southeast Portland school was damaged by a large fire on the morning of November 10, but Holgate Library staff were there to usher school children and administrators into the safety of the library building. Chair Cogen thanked the Holgate Library staff and commended their “on the spot creativity and fast thinking.”
