Multnomah County recently released the Fiscal Year 2010 (FY 10) Risk Management Annual Report, which provides information on employee injuries, illnesses and car accidents that occur at work as well as related claims and insurance coverage. This year’s report revealed that Multnomah County continues to have the lowest cost of risk of any public entity in the state of Oregon.
Over the past 10 years, Multnomah County has seen an overall decrease in both the number of injuries and the rate of injury per employee. The most common injuries were sprains and strains. The majority of injuries were caused by preventable accidents. The county encourages employees to use proper techniques when lifting and to be careful when walking on uneven surfaces.
Multnomah County’s motor-vehicle accident rate has risen steadily since 2003 and is higher than the cities of Portland and Eugene. The report showed 106 accidents in FY10, nearly the same number as the preceding year. Nearly 60 percent of the motor-vehicle accidents in FY10 were deemed preventable.
