Animal Technician Series Positions in this series perform technical and routine duties in providing humane care and control of animals impounded at the Multnomah County Animal Services Facility.

Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Clean, feed, and water animals according to the type and condition of the animal.
  • Perform community outreach and provide customer service and information to the public related to adoption and care of animals.
  • Assist with the monitoring of animal behavior and health through interaction, observation, and handling.
  • Process incoming animals into shelter care, administer routine vaccinations (excluding rabies), maintain records, and release animals to owners.
  • Clean and disinfect public areas and animal housing areas using techniques that support animal health and welfare.
  • Maintain storage areas; monitor inventory; stock ordered supplies and donations.
  • Provide animals with minimum mental health requirements and enrichment activities.
  • Perform restraint and safe handling of animals using low-stress techniques; assist in animal housing management and transferring animals between shelter areas; maintain safe animal housing areas.
  • In addition to the above duties, the Animal Technician 2 level will (depending on animal care or animal health assignment): provide animals with advanced enrichment activities; screen potential adopters and perform adoption counseling duties; perform behavior and medical assessment for placement or disposition recommendation; assist in creating and implementing animal behavior modification plans; perform routine and pre-surgical health exams to prepare animals for surgery; collect diagnostic testing samples and perform in-house diagnostic testing; perform drug calculations, prepare and administer non-prescribed and prescribed medications under direction of a veterinarian; monitor animals before, during, and after surgical processes, perform triage operations; assist with applying and removing wound dressings, casts, and splints; euthanize and dispose of animals.

Animal Technician 1

  • Entry level
  • Technical
  • Perform the more routine duties as assigned with increasing independence.
  • Decisions made or actions taken require higher level review and work is checked for progress and reviewed for quality and compliance to policy and procedures.
  • Typically, incumbents may use the entry level to obtain the proficiencies to qualify at the next level in the classification series.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
  • May exercise technical and functional supervision over administrative staff, volunteers, and interns.

Animal Technician 2

  • Journey level
  • Technical
  • Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
  • Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
  • May exercise technical and functional supervision over staff, volunteers, and interns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Animal Technician 1

Training and experience for entry level, technical Job Profiles are typically equivalent to an associate’s degree and up to one (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position (Equivalency: 2-3 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Animal Technician 2

Training and experience for journey level, technical Job Profiles are typically equivalent to an associate’s degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency: 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
