Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Plan and implement basic skills and General Educational Development (GED) programs; administer BASIS educational assessment tool to evaluate levels of proficiency and deficiency; implement appropriate education plan; instruct clients in the basic skills of reading, writing, and computation in preparation for their GED.
  • Monitor and evaluate client learning progress; record progress and make curriculum and instruction adjustments; develop and implement a variety of instruction delivery methods such as individualized, small group, lecture, and computer-assisted learning.
  • Participate in curriculum development; recommend textbooks, instructional materials, and equipment; recommend library and reference materials for use by clients; assist with program coordination.
  • Administer special learning needs inventory and make appropriate accommodations; teach courses for groups with special needs.
  • Research, recommend, and implement changes to basic skills instruction planning; remain current on technological changes, new developments in subject area, and innovative teaching techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Basic Skills Educator

Training and experience for journey level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 5-8 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
