This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile conduct formal administrative inmate hearings in county correctional facilities.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedule, hold, and conduct inmate due process disciplinary hearings; receive evidence and obtain and record witness testimony; work with an interpreter if needed.
  • Review inmate misconduct reports for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness; return reports for edits; retrieve inmate data and assemble misconduct packets; respond to in-custody written questions and information requests from inmates, family members, attorneys, and other agencies.
  • Ensure due process, as defined by policy and case law, is met during the administrative hearing process; conduct inmate disciplinary process in accordance to standards; propose appropriate changes; safeguard the county from liability issues.
  • Make determination of guilt or innocence of rule violation based on reports, testimony, and evidence; impose remedial treatment, sanctions, or corrective action in accordance with the inmate and MCSO agency manuals; issue sanctions, including loss of privilege, fines, fees, loss of good time, worker status, and restriction of program participation.
  • Update records with hearing data; prepare paperwork; distribute copies to inmate, management, and other staff; record lockdown information and update staff regarding security concerns; provide the fiscal unit with fine, restitution, and fee information to update inmate accounts; provide the records unit loss of good time information to determine appropriate time calculations; prepare inmate sanction reduction and appeal packets for the Facility Commander; respond to and update granted sanction reductions and appeals.    
  • May request mental health, medical, competency, and psychiatric evaluations and reviews; notify law enforcement agencies of inmate behavioral issues.  
  • Determine if criminal charges are being filed; contact Enforcement Deputies; assign restitution for damaged and destroyed property; prepare monthly reports; catalog or replace audio tape files.
  • Provide lead direction of work activities; prioritize and coordinate work assignments; review work for accuracy and content; evaluate projects, activities, and processes; monitor work performed to meet agreed upon goals and objectives; attend daily roll call to gather and share information on inmate disciplinary issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Receive direction from manager or staff.
  • Exercise technical and functional supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Corrections Hearing Officer

Training and experience for journey level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 5-8 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
