This is a standalone classification and is not part of a series. Positions in this classification manage operations of a shift, unit or project in Corrections within the Sheriff's Office.

Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision for a corrections operation; plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of a diverse workforce; develop and revise work processes; establish work schedules; provide or coordinate staff training; manage performance and work with staff to correct deficiencies; monitor work performed to meet agreed upon goals and objectives.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; recommend and implement policies and procedures; assist in the development and administration of the budget; participate in forecasting additional funds for staffing and resources; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
  • Respond to and resolve confidential and sensitive inquiries; provide expert guidance to other departments, the general public and/or outside agencies; investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary; act as representative on committees, interagency task forces, special projects, special assignments, and community outreach activities as assigned.
  • Analyze and review federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; conduct analysis on best practices and trends, and formulate and implement recommendations.
  • Coordinate corrections operations and efforts with other divisions, departments and state and local government agencies; cultivate relationships with various public and citizen organizations.
  • Coordinate and participate in major criminal investigations; respond to and supervise major crime scenes; testify in court or administrative proceedings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


LEVEL AND TYPE OF WORK AND/OR SUPERVISION:

Corrections Lieutenant

  • The Corrections Lieutenant manages the operations of Corrections as the Lieutenant manages the operations in Law Enforcement within the Sheriff's Office.

  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from executive management.             
  • Exercise direct supervision over staff.
  • Exercise indirect supervision through managers, supervisors, and/or lead workers.
  • The Corrections Lieutenant manages the operations of Corrections whereas the Lieutenant manages the operations in Law Enforcement within the Sheriff's Office. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 
Corrections Lieutenant
Training and experience for advanced level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 7-10 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Possession of the supervisory certification from the Oregon Department of Public Safety and Standards Training.
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
