This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile conduct legal research and writing; assist in state and federal litigation, administrative hearings, and advising county officials on issues while continuing education in law school.

Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Assist attorneys by performing in-depth research and analysis of a broad spectrum of legal matters related to coursework and current enrollment in law school.
  • Draft legal memoranda on municipal law; assist in drafting municipal legislation.
  • Gather documentation, evidence, and information from clients and/or witnesses; prepare cases for trial.
  • Write memoranda of law, arbitration, trial and appellate briefs stating the issues, legal reasoning, and conclusions of law to be used by an attorney in providing legal advice or in preparing for a case.
  • Review contracts, court papers and other documents for legal sufficiency.
  • Conduct legislative history; assist in the preparation of pleadings in civil matters; attend court hearings and meetings with clients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Decisions made or actions taken require higher level review and work is checked for progress and reviewed for quality and compliance to policy and procedures.
  • Typically, incumbents may use the entry level to obtain the proficiencies to qualify at the next level in the classification series.
  • Receive general supervision from manager or staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 

County Attorney Legal Intern
Training and experience for this entry level, professional classification is typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and enrollment in an accredited law school and up to one (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.  (Equivalency 0-1 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
