Learn how to reclaim your pet if they are impounded by first responders and brought to Multnomah County Animal Services. Animals with ID or a known owner are held for 6 days. Call 503-988-7387.
Where did my pet go?
Your pet has been placed in the Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) shelter located at 1700 W Historic Columbia River Hwy., Troutdale, OR 97060
How long can my pet stay there?
Multnomah County Animal Services is not able to take your pet for ongoing boarding, due to shelter capacity, but our ordinance does allow us to take a pet in, "impound it" and if the animal has identification like a license tag, microchip, or known owner, we will hold the pet for up to 144 hours, or 6 days, from the time of impoundment. During that time the pet owner or their representative may come and pick up the pet during normal business hours. Representatives must have the permission given to MCAS from the owner to pick up a pet on their behalf.
What happens if I am unable to pick up my pet within 6 days?
If the pet is not picked up, ownership transfers to Multnomah County Animal Services who then determines the pet’s next placement. If you’re unable to pick up within that time frame, please call MCAS at 503-988-7387 for options.
Are there fees associated with my pet getting impounded?
No, there are no fees associated with impoundment or reclaiming pets.
How do I pick-up my pet?
The pet owner or their representative may come and pick up the pet during our regular business hours within the 144 hour (6 day) hold period. To pick up the animal from the shelter, owners need to provide identification for themselves and proof of ownership of the animal - this could include the impound receipt, pet license, vet records, or photos of the animal. Talk with your caseworker or animal shelter staff about any needed accommodations for time or documentation before the hold time is up. Learn more at multcopets.org/reclaiming-your-pet

Will MCAS bring my pet back to me?
No, at the end of the hold period, Multnomah County Animal Services does not have the staff capacity to bring the pet back to the person, wherever they might be.
Is there public transportation to MCAS?
Finding a round trip ride by car is the safest way to pick-up your pet. Yes, there is public transit to MCAS, but there is a walk from the bus shelter to the animal shelter that should be avoided. Additionally, the shelter is located in Troutdale which is a fair distance from many other support services.
Who could help me get my pet?
Someone you choose to represent you or official case workers can make arrangements to get your pet back if you aren’t able to do it yourself. Call MCAS to give your official approval for your representative and get your animal’s identification number in the shelter. Give the impound receipt (if available) and the animal ID number to the person you choose to pick up your pet.
Who do I call to ask about my pet?
Call MCAS during business hours, 7 days a week, using the main number (503) 988-7387.
What happens in a winter storm?
If the County closes due to inclement weather, then the shelter will close to the public. Essential staff will continue to provide for care and feeding of the pets at the shelter. However, front desk and call center staff will not be able to take calls.
In the event of inclement weather and closing to the public, we do extend hold times beyond the maximum 144 hours or 6 days. Our voicemail is updated during this time to keep owners and partners informed.
