Students’ experience with Multnomah County Dental Program

Narrator: So, I saw that they brushed your teeth. What else do you think that they did?

Grace, 8 years old: Umm, they watered it and dried it.

Narrator: Uh huh.

Grace, 8 years old: And they put sealants on a white liquid on my tooth. And they put a bubblegum taste on top of my tooth. And, I was done.

Maggie, 8 years old: They put sealants on my teeth. And put some bubblegum toothpaste taste on my tooth like my actual toothpaste that I have at home.

Why is it important to have your teeth checked?

Grace, 8 years old:  So you won’t get cavities and drills in the hole and brush ‘em.

What would you tell your friends about getting sealants?

Jeremyah, 9 years old: It kinda tickles your mouth and pretty cool.

Why is teamwork important?

Heather Simmons, Program Supervisor, School and Community Oral Health Programs: Teamwork is so important in this work especially when working with young children. You know young children are very shy and you don’t always know what sort of experiences they have had.

And I have to say that the folks that work with School Community Oral Health, they truly are passionate about their work. They really really enjoy working with children and they are very good with children. And it’s nice when I am out watching, you can tell that they are working together if a child is anxious. Even they will take turns doing things with the child to kinda try to help them relax and make them feel more comfortable or even keep them distracted a little bit with counting and doing different things.

It’s also nice watching the team work together because the hygienist might be doing some things and then you can see they have built such a close relationship together that they hardly have to talk to one another. They know each other's’ movements. They know what’s coming next. And that really works for the child. It gets things done quickly as possible and gets them back to classroom.
