EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Perform carpentry, masonry, and steelwork duties to maintain and repair concrete, steel, and wood bridges; operate bridge machinery, gears, cables, motors, bearings, brakes, hydraulic systems, expansion joints, and related bridge systems.
- Inspect bridges and machinery equipment for needed maintenance or repairs; perform preventive maintenance to all bridge machinery on movable drawbridges; fabricate, clean, and replace strengthening bridge members; cut and drill new steel; repair or replace existing concrete structures.
- Operate air compressor, pneumatic hammer, paving breaker, drill, saw, mechanical winch or hoist, paint spray gun, and other tools and equipment; weld, blacksmith, braze, cut, and fabricate sheet metal to repair and replace bridge catwalks.
- Develop, implement, and perform traffic control activities based on applicable requirements; install and repair traffic gates, handrails, fences, expansion devices, and joints.
- Operate various vehicles, cranes, heavy equipment, and boats; perform all required repair of operator houses such as plumbing, siding, and roofing.
- Design and fabricate systems and installations or fabricate replacement parts from prints; install rigging and scaffolding, decking stringers, bracing, handrails, and headers on wooden bridges.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
- Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
- Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
- Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
- May exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
Bridge Maintenance Specialist
Training and experience for journey level, trades classifications are typically equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 1-4 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
- Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 12 months of hire.
