This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile provide assistance to a Department Director in the areas of community and media relations, and develop community advocacy efforts through effective communication sources.
Job description

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Establish and maintain positive relations with media by providing accurate and timely information about department services; act as public information officer and media spokesperson when necessary; maintain regular contact with media representatives; provide public and media relations counsel and advice to staff and community groups.
  • Administer and direct a comprehensive public education and media relations program; administer and direct an effective in-house communications program.
  • Write and/or edit informational materials such as news releases, newsletters, fact sheets, annual reports, speeches, public service announcements or grant proposals; make presentations to community groups.
  • Provide expert guidance to other departments, the general public, and/or outside agencies; represent the county to the public, elected officials, other agencies, governments, and organizations including making presentations, participating in meetings, and conducting community outreach.
  • Respond to and resolve confidential and sensitive inquiries; investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary; act as representative on committees, interagency task forces, special projects, and other community outreach activities as assigned.
  • Analyze and review federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure compliance; conduct analysis on best practices and trends, and formulate and implement recommendations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from executive management.          
  • May exercise direct supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
 

Public Relations Coordinator
Training and experience for advanced level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 7-10 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
 
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
