There is no 24-hour waiting period to report someone missing!
If you feel like your missing loved one is in immediate danger, please contact 911, otherwise use the following law enforcement agencies to file a missing persons report with your local police. Please note that anyone, not just family members, can file a missing persons report.
- Portland Police Bureau Missing Persons: 503-823-3333
- Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office: 503-988-4300
- Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office: 503-655-8211
- Washington County Sheriff’s Office: 503 846-2700
- Vancouver Police Department: 360-487-7400
- Clark County Sheriff’s Office: 360-397-2211
It is recommended that a family member of the missing party call local hospitals, inpatient behavioral health facilities, jails/prisons/detention centers, and inpatient detox or rehabilitation facilities to see if the missing party has been admitted for treatments. To report a missing person, contact local police. The Medical Examiner’s Office does not take missing persons reports. We do provide law enforcement and families of missing persons with the tools to actively and successfully search for missing persons in Oregon.
A family member can also call local Medical Examiner Offices or the state’s Vital Statistics department at 971-673-1182 to see if their loved one has been found or reported deceased.
Please note that medical information is private information and many facilities may not be able to divulge information under HIPAA regulations to anyone other than direct family, such as parents or legal guardians, legal spouses, adult children, or blood related siblings.
DNA samples
If the missing person has not been located within 30 days of a report, investigators may try to get a DNA sample of the missing person or from biological family members. They may also try to get diagnostic quality copies of the missing person’s dental records from their dentist and/or orthodontist.
Family reference samples and direct reference samples provide biological material for DNA analysis. When successfully completed, the DNA profiles are entered into a national system (CODIS) that allows federal, state and local crime laboratories and medical examiner’s offices to electronically exchange and compare DNA profiles.
These forms are for law enforcement and families, to be submitted with your DNA sample:
Family Reference Sample Form (294.43 KB)
