Courthouse construction to impact SW Madison traffic

March 27, 2020

There will be some temporary traffic changes starting Monday, March 30 on SW Madison Street in the blocks near Multnomah County’s new Central Courthouse at the west end of the Hawthorne Bridge. One of two eastbound traffic lanes will be closed around the clock until late May so that  courthouse contractor Hoffman Construction can build frontage improvements on the north side of the building. Westbound traffic lanes and shared paths on the Hawthorne Bridge will not be impacted.

Temporary traffic changes include:

  • Traffic lanes will be reduced to one eastbound lane between SW First Ave. and SW Naito Parkway.

  • Instead of a bike lane and sidewalk, bicyclists and pedestrians will share an eight-foot wide path between SW First Ave. and SW Naito Parkway.

  • During some night work, eastbound bicyclists and pedestrians will be directed to use the northbound ramp from SW Naito Parkway to access the Hawthorne Bridge.

The changes will allow the contractor to remove scaffolding from the north side of the building and construct new sidewalks around the building and stairs leading from SW Madison Street to SW Naito Parkway. Paving and lane striping will be done on a weekend in May.  The plan is to schedule the paving during a weekend when the bridge is closed for maintenance.

The new Central Courthouse is scheduled to open in the second half of July 2020. For information on the courthouse project, visit: /central-courthouse-project.
