Ian Cannon has been named to the permanent position of Multnomah County Engineer and Transportation Division Director. As director of the county’s newly organized Transportation Division, Cannon will oversee the county’s transportation planning, road services and bridge services teams, and the County Survey Office.

Cannon was named the county’s bridge services manager in 2008. In 2010 he was appointed program manager for the Sellwood Bridge Replacement Project, the county’s largest transportation capital project in many decades. He served as interim County Engineer for part of 2015, overseeing engineering issues for the county’s roads and bridges.

Cannon joined the county’s Bridge Services team in 1997 as manager of engineering services.  He previously worked as a lead designer and quality manager for a Portland bridge engineering firm.  Cannon is a professional civil engineer. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Washington State University and a bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy from Bowdoin College.

“At Multnomah County, Ian has played a leadership role in the major bridge projects of the last two decades,” said Kim Peoples, director of the county’s Department of Community Services, which includes the Transportation Division. “The next decade will be equally busy as we work to ensure that our roads and bridges meet the community’s needs.  I am confident that Ian is the right person to lead our team in the challenging days ahead.”

Multnomah County has jurisdiction for nearly 300 miles of roads in Fairview, Troutdale and Wood Village and in unincorporated areas. The county also maintains six Willamette River bridges and 21 smaller bridges.

The transportation division includes 114 employees: 60 in road services, 41 in bridge services, 10 in survey, and three in planning.  For more information, visit /dcs
