January 16 hearing for Legislative District 36 appointment

January 3, 2020

A public hearing has been scheduled for Multnomah County’s Board of Commissioners to appoint a replacement to fill the term of District 36 State Representative Jennifer Williamson, who resigned in December 2019.  The hearing will be on Thursday, January 16 starting at 5 pm in the County’s Boardroom at 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd. in Portland.

District 36 is located in Southwest Portland.  The process for appointing a replacement for a state legislator is for the former legislator’s political party to nominate three to five candidates that county commissioners select from.  The Multnomah Democrats will hold a meeting on January 12 to nominate candidates.

At the January 16 county hearing, candidates will make opening statements and answer questions from county commissioners. There will be an opportunity for public comment before commissioners vote to select a District 36 replacement at the meeting.  The replacement will serve through 2020. A May 2020 primary election will be held for the 2021-2022 term for District 36.
