Traffic changes for courthouse work

March 6, 2020

There will be some traffic changes in the block around Multnomah County’s new Central Courthouse at the west end of the Hawthorne Bridge, as contractor Hoffman Construction begins work on frontage improvements. Starting next week changes will impact traffic on SW Madison Street on the north side of the building:

  • Night Work: Starting Monday night, March 9, one eastbound lane onto the Hawthorne Bridge will be closed between SW 1st Avenue and SW Naito Parkway, and bicyclists and pedestrians will share a path. One traffic lane will remain open. For the next month, this closure will often be in place between 8 pm and 5 am.
  • Day Work: Beginning Monday, March 9, the two eastbound lanes will be narrowed between SW 1st Avenue and SW Naito Parkway, and bicyclists and pedestrians will share an eight foot wide path. This will be in place through March.

The changes will allow the contractor to remove a covered sidewalk and scaffolding. This spring the contractor will construct new sidewalks around the building and stairs leading from SW Madison Street to SW Naito Parkway.

The new Central Courthouse is scheduled to open in the second half of July 2020. For information on the courthouse project, visit: /central-courthouse-project.
