County launches interactive site to celebrate Broadway Bridge Centennial

March 21, 2013

In honor of the Broadway Bridge's upcoming 100th birthday on Monday, April 22, Multnomah County recently launched a website called HappyBirthdayBroadwayBridge.com.

Visitors to the website can learn about the Broadway Bridge’s history; get details about the celebration on Sunday, April 21 being hosted by the PDX Bridge Festival; and post fond memories and birthday well-wishes about the Broadway Bridge right on the homepage of the site.

Completed in 1913, the Willamette River crossing connecting Old Town/Chinatown to Northeast Portland was the world's longest bascule bridge - a type of drawbridge - at the time of its opening. The Broadway Bridge remains one of the only moveable bridges of its type in the world. In November 2012, it earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places alongside Multnomah County's Hawthorne, Burnside and Morrison bridges.
