Multnomah County Medical Examiner identifies one hypothermia death occurring on Feb. 2, 2025

Multnomah County, Ore. (Feb. 4, 2025) — During our severe weather press conference today, it was mentioned that three people have died in Portland of hypothermia over the last three weeks. Here is the information the Medical Examiner reported to County officials in a regularly scheduled severe weather hypothermia update meeting, per our protocols during emergency activations.

Between Jan. 10 and Jan. 28 there were no suspected hypothermia deaths. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Program has now confirmed one hypothermia death occurring on Feb. 2, 2025, in Portland. The person was male and found in the 97219 ZIP code.

Unlike most hypothermia deaths, which can take days to classify just as “suspected,” and then require months of additional investigation to rule as official, this investigation was able to proceed quickly. No other details are being released at this time.

As death investigations progress during severe weather emergencies, we will report any suspected hypothermia deaths. Some deaths can take several weeks to months to get a final cause of death.

The County will update this information as it becomes available.
