Parole Officers Reach Out to Local Veterans

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, the Department of Community Justice (DCJ) participated in the East County Veterans Stand Down. The Veterans Stand Down is an annual event hosted by Central City Concern for veterans and their families to receive basic social services from a variety of community and government agencies. The Chapel, a foursquare church in Troutdale, hosted a Stand Down specifically aimed at helping veterans living in east Multnomah County. DCJ participation this year provided a valuable contribution to veterans and led to ideas for next year.

At the East County Stand Down event, vendors provided medical, dental and mental health services, substance abuse counseling, employment, housing and legal assistance, a hot meal, and hygiene and personal supplies. DCJ sponsored a table set-up by Parole/Probation Officer Jennifer Reiser. Staff volunteers also included: David Landis, Javelin Hardy, and Brenda Bunce who contributed their time, passion and effort to local veterans who attended. Karen Rhein ensured that the DCJ table was fully stocked with supplies including 2-year planners that were very popular with participants.

Officer Reiser reported afterwards, “The event went very well…we had questions from participants ranging from a request for help to clear a warrant to…asking about veteran's court. We even had contact with a DCJ client that was just released from prison a week and a half ago.”

This was DCJ’s first time participating in the East County Stand Down. The planning of next year’s booth is already underway and will include more information on employment and apprenticeship resources. Those who would like to volunteer should contact Kimberly Bernard, DCJ Communications Manager.
