Hi I'm Jacob Padron and I'm Jack Baikov we're with Multnomah County Weatherization Program.

So one question I get asked a lot is what electric space heater is the most efficient?

With electric heat there is essentially two different types there's a resistance type: something that you would either a plugin or something that's hardwired
kind of like a baseboard or cadet. So if I want to get the best bang for my buck what do I need to do?

That is the question and the answer to it might be surprising. All the space heaters regardless of their age, regardless of the energy claim are, producing the same exact amount of heat per dollar spent. They are all 100% efficient.

However while it sounds great, it actually doesn't give you that much heat per dollar.

There is only one way to get more heat using electricity than using electric resistance heat and that is a heat pump.

A heat pump is about one-third the cost of running one of these electric heaters. They operate on a similar principle as an air conditioner or refrigerator.

Multnomah County weatherization program helps low-income households make their houses more energy efficient comfortable healthy and safe.
