By law, Oregon employers must carry workers’ compensation insurance or be self-insured. Multnomah County is a self-insured employer providing coverage to injured workers, some volunteers, and sentenced inmates. Benefits may include payment of medical bills, wage loss and disability.
The State of Oregon has had some form of workers’ compensation program since 1914. Today’s system is designed to do the following:
- Prevent or reduce worker injuries and illnesses;
- Provide appropriate medical treatment and benefits to help injured workers recover and return to work as soon as possible;
- Resolve disputes quickly and fairly.
Effective August 1, 1997, Multnomah County’s Risk Management Division contracted with two managed care organizations (MCOs) to provide employees with managed care services for all new workers’ compensation claims. The MCO’s selected are Kaiser Permanente and Providence MCO.
