The shelter at Multnomah County Animal Services is offering an adoption fee special to help find homes for the cats filling the shelter this “kitten season."
All cat adoption fees are for the cost of a license, $12.
The offer will run until the cat population returns to manageable levels at the shelter (1700 W. Columbia River Hwy. in Troutdale).“We’re packed to the point that we're out of room,” said Animal Services director Mike Oswald, "and we need the community's help."
During “kitten season” from now through early autumn, the community shelter can get as many as 30 cats a day. As the region’s only open-door shelter that accepts all stray animals, the shelter is at about 100 percent of capacity as of Thursday, June 19--caring for 126 cats and kittens.
“Any cat lover can help by adopting,’’ Oswald said. “We have every kind of cat for any kind of home situation, and have staff here who can help you to make a great adoption match.”
Adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, a rabies vaccination, a first set of shots, a health exam, a microchip and a license.
Can’t adopt right now? There are other ways anybody can help with our community’s cats.
- If you find a cat, you can try to find its owner by listing it on our Lost/Found page, posting flyers, and using Craigslist.
- Also consider re-homing your cat by connecting with friends and family through Facebook. Consider the trap/neuter/return option for feral cats.
- And you can also help by being a foster owner for a cat or donating canned or dry cat/kitten food to the shelter.
- People interested in learning more about being a foster owner can attend a free cat and kitten orientation Friday, June 20 at the shelter from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. Please RSVP to Jodi Luffman at jodi.m.luffman@multco.us. For additional details, go to http://multcopets.org/events/cat-kitten-foster-orientation-june-20.
