With temperatures reaching the high 90s Sunday, Multnomah County is urging people to take steps to safe especially during the Good in the Hood festival and other outdoor events. Good in the Hood takes place all day in Lillis-Albina Park next to Harriet Tubman School near the corner of N. Flint and N. Russell Street.
TriMet has stepped up to provide a temporary cooling center for festival-goers. After Saturday’s record heat, county officials worked with event organizers to arrange for a 40-foot TriMet bus to provide an air-conditioned break for up to 40 people from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The bus is located in the southwest corner of the park just behind the school where Commercial Avenue deadends.
AMR Ambulance, Safeway and the Portland Water Bureau were all on hand to provide emergency care, ice and water. Multnomah County Health, Department of County Human Services and Emergency Management worked with the Portland Police Bureau and Legacy Health to coordinate a response to the heat.
“We want people to enjoy themselves, but be aware that older adults, babies, people with chronic health conditions, outdoor workers and athletes can become seriously ill much more quickly,’’ said Dr. Paul Lewis, Tri-County Health Officer. “Everyone should drink plenty of water, wear hats and light clothing, and find shade or cool air as much as possible.’’
