This is a standalone job profile and is not part of a series. Positions in this job profile inspect, maintain, trim, spray, and remove trees and apply herbicides and plant control vegetation on county road shoulders and forest land.
Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Conduct inspections and surveys to evaluate the health and safety of trees and shrubs; answer arboreal questions; assist in construction plans and make recommendations about tree health, safety, and survival.
  • Conduct inspections of weed reports in order to eradicate noxious weeds and ensure compliance with State regulations; survey waterways to detect early infestations of invasive aquatic weeds.
  • Select and mix chemical compounds for spray area and types of vegetation; ensure chemicals are stored, mixed, moved, and disposed of in a safe manner; evaluate the performance and efficiency of chemicals; inspect previously sprayed areas; identify problems in eradicating or controlling specific plants.
  • Identify and evaluate areas for beneficial plant development; plant wildflowers, grasses, and low growing plant species; monitor effectiveness in eliminating undesirable plants.
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation to the general public and/or outside agencies regarding infestations; respond to citizen complaints and educate the public on control measures.
  • Operate, maintain, and inspect light trucks and spray equipment; test and calibrate equipment; ensure proper vehicle service and cleaning according to maintenance schedules; perform minor repairs in the field; prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Vegetation Specialist

Training and experience for journey level, technical classifications are typically equivalent to an associate's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.

REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:

  • Possession of Oregon Department of Agriculture Public Herbicide Applicator license within 60 days.
