The budget amendment fully restores SUN Community Schools by reducing
internal administrative and support services countywide.
Multnomah County Commissioner Meghan Moyer introduced a budget amendment to restore funding to SUN Community Schools, which is slated to eliminate 9 sites in the Chair’s Proposed Budget. The $1.2m funding restoration maintains current
funding levels by reducing Multnomah County’s internal administrative and support infrastructure. Moyer’s budget amendment, if approved, would continue County funding to 92 SUN Community School sites.
This budget amendment reflects Commissioner Moyer’s commitment to shrinking
Multnomah County’s administrative footprint to meet its fiscal reality. Multnomah County Board of Commissioners were presented with county revenue projections that foresee budget cuts over next few years primarily due to inflationary pressures and the loss of federal & state funding. Bracing for revenue shortfalls in this budget year and beyond, Commissioner Moyer is pushing for leaner county administration in order to preserve services for Multnomah County residents.
Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community Schools play a vital role in strengthening school communities by connecting students to after school programs, academic support and summer learning opportunities. Multnomah County contracts with community-based organizations to provide culturally responsive services to students, as well as, support their families through engagement, community resource connections and social emotional services. If the budget amendment does not pass, the nine site closures would disproportionately impact low-income families, working parents and students of color who rely on these services — especially for families experiencing fear and uncertainty related to immigration enforcement.
“In meeting our fiscal reality, it is my belief that the County shoulders as much of the pain of budget cuts as possible in order to maintain community services,” said
Commissioner Moyer.
