Improved energy efficiency can save money and reduce harmful environmental impacts associated with traditional production of energy — using and burning fossil fuels. Purchasing renewable energy is one way to reduce some of the impacts associated with energy production. Other things to consider include:
Reduce use: Purchasing energy-efficient lighting systems and office equipment can reduce overall energy use and negative impacts.
Operate and maintain properly: Energy-efficient operations and maintenance ensure that energy-efficient products continue to produce their intended benefits. Where applicable, energy saving equipment should be purchased with the most up-to-date energy efficiency functions. Staff should be trained in the proper use of energy efficient features of their equipment (such as power saving settings on computers and copiers).
Things to look for:
- Well known product certifications for energy savings, e.g. Energy Star.
- Energy efficient lighting, and motion sensors.
- Efficient use. Ask vendors for training to ensure maximum efficiency.
- Power saving features.
- Maximize daylight.
Things to avoid:
- Equipment that can’t be turned off or that has no power saving mode.
