Alternate Plat and Survey Monumentations

Guidelines for setting monuments when iron rods or pipes cannot be used.

Pursuant to ORS 92.060(2), when 5/8” x 30” iron rods (or 3/4” x 30” iron pipes) cannot be set, the county surveyor may authorize setting of another type of monument. The following guidelines describe alternate monumentation that is approved for use on plats in Multnomah County:

  • For concrete surfaces, Berntsen “Survey Mark” (BP1P or BP2), or other equivalent monuments will be acceptable. Brass screws with washers are only acceptable in rare circumstances when there is not enough room to set a “Survey Mark” or similar monument.
  • All monuments set in asphalt surfaces must be capped with aluminum caps. Plastic caps in asphalt surfaces are not acceptable unless installed in monument boxes.
  • Offset monuments must be pre-approved by the county surveyor. If the actual corner cannot be set due to obstructions, please contact the county surveyor to discuss options. In some cases (such as offsets to curve points on boundary lines, or when a nearby monument can serve as a corner reference) it may be preferable to omit setting a reference altogether.
