Commissioner Meieran's Initiative to Mitigate Environmental and Financial Risks
Commissioner Sharon Meieran is spearheading a groundbreaking policy to address the significant public health, environmental safety, and financial risks identified in Multnomah County’s seismic risk analysis of the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub.
Similar to King County’s Fossil Fuel Risk Bonding ordinance, this new financial assurance program will mandate that owners and operators at the CEI Hub take financial responsibility for any damages caused by the fossil fuels and hazardous materials stored there. By acknowledging the high risk and danger posed by these materials, even when stored in tanks, Multnomah County will ensure that taxpayers are not burdened with the costs of potential spills or accidents. This proactive approach aims to protect our environment and safeguard our community from the repercussions of hazardous material mishandling.
