Positions in this series perform office and field technical engineering functions related to drafting, plan review, inspecting, office research and assisting the public in the areas of bridges, roads and related public works.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Perform inspections of designated components of bridge and/or road construction, which may include reinforced concrete and structural steel installation, shop fabrication, paint, surveys, grading, surfacing, drainage and others; keep inspection records and prepare reports.
- Operate and maintain survey instruments, check calculations and draft contour and topographic maps; compute grades, coordinates, alignments, areas, mass diagrams and material quantities.
- Perform computer-aided drawings such as drafting bridges, road structures and plans; maintain various data systems; input and summarize project data; review and analyze reports and impact statements; prepare estimates and related documents such as public land corner restoration and test reports.
- Conduct materials lab tests such as nuclear density, asphalt concrete extraction, aggregate gradation, specific gravity, concrete slump unit weight and air content; operate electronic traffic counting equipment; check property descriptions; prepare permits.
- Provide guidance to other departments, the general public and/or outside agencies; investigate concerns as necessary.
- In addition to the above duties, the Engineering Technician 2 will: train lower level staff and survey crews; provide project support and documentation; design road or bridge elements; develop various data systems.
- In addition to the above duties, the Engineering Technician 3 will: lead lower level staff; plan day-to-day survey, drafting, inspections, bridge, road or other public works functions; serve as a subject matter expert on standards, practices, laws and regulations; prepare contract documents and road takeover or transfer orders; recommend right-of-way requirements; plan, design and administer multiple smaller or parts of a larger project; coordinate project safety and quality assurance functions; assist in developing standards and procedures.

Engineering Technician 1
- Entry level
- Technical
- Perform the more routine duties as assigned with increasing independence.
- Decisions made or actions taken require higher-level review and work is checked for progress and reviewed for quality and compliance to policy and procedures.
- Typically, incumbents may use the entry level to obtain the proficiencies to qualify at the next level in the classification series.
- Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
Engineering Technician 2
- Journey level
- Technical
- Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well-developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
- Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
- Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
- Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
- Receive general supervision from manager or staff.
- May exercise technical and functional supervision over staff.
Engineering Technician 3
- Advanced level
- Technical
- Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
- Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
- Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
- Receive general supervision from manager.
- Exercise technical and functional supervision over staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.
Engineering Technician 1
Training and experience for entry level, technical classifications are typically equivalent to an associate's degree and up to one (1) year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 2-3 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
Engineering Technician 2
Training and experience for journey level, technical classifications are typically equivalent to an associate's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 3-6 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
Engineering Technician 3
Training and experience for advanced level, technical classifications are typically equivalent to an associate's degree and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 5-8 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
