This is a standalone classification and is not part of a series. Positions in this sworn classification perform supervisory, investigative, administrative support work within a law enforcement setting.
Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of activities of a unit, team, or patrol shift; plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of a diverse workforce assigned to specialized units, such as River Patrol, Special Investigations Unit, Civil section, Hazmat, Search and Rescue, and others; develop and revise work processes; establish work schedules; provide or coordinate staff training; manage performance and work with staff to correct deficiencies; monitor work performed to meet agreed upon goals and objectives.
  • Supervise and coordinate law enforcement activities, such as investigating criminal cases, offering guidance and expertise to investigators, and screening arrests to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and citizen rights; review and evaluate incident and activity reports; report to the scene of serious incidents; protect and preserve crime scenes and evidence.
  • Identify and recommend changes to policies and procedures; prepare various reports on operations and activities; testify in court.
  • Provide information and assistance to staff and the public; investigate complaints and recommend resolutions as necessary; act as representative on committees, with local jurisdictions with intergovernmental agreements, interagency task forces, special projects, and other community outreach activities as assigned.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.              
  • Exercise direct supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Sergeant

Training and experience for this classification is a bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience as a Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff within the last five (5) years.

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.

REQUIRED TRAINING, LICENSES, AND/OR CERTIFICATES:

Sergeant

  • Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) supervisory certification required at the conclusion of the 12-18 month probationary period.
