Same-sex couples began receiving marriage licenses in Multnomah County on Monday, minutes after U.S. District Court Judge Michael McShane overturned the state’s ban on marriage for gay and lesbian couples.
News of McShane’s decision on May 19 was greeted by cheers by same-sex couples who’d camped on lawn chairs outside Multnomah County’s building at 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland. Several couples had waited for hours before the noon ruling by McShane ensuring marriage rights throughout Oregon for same-sex couples.
When news of the ruling spread, one man shouted "equality," which the crowd also cheered.
Any couple wanting a marriage license in Multnomah County can apply online at www.multcomarriage.org or go to the customer service office in Suite 175 of the county building at 501 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd.
Whether the marriage license application is completed online or in the office, both parties must appear together in the county office to sign the license when it is issued. Both parties must have valid picture I.D. in the name that is entered on the marriage license application.
The fee for an Oregon marriage license is $60 in cash or certified funds only. The license becomes effective three calendar days after issuance and payment. Couples may request a waiver of that three-day waiting period for a $5 fee.
