Multnomah County recruiting residents to help create public campaign financing program

October 14, 2024

Multnomah County is recruiting at least eight community members — two from each of the County’s four districts — to serve on a new campaign finance committee.

The Public Campaign Financing Implementation Advisory Committee will help create a public campaign financing program for candidates seeking Multnomah County’s elected offices before the November 2026 General Election.

The Advisory Committee, established by the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, will meet from November 2024 through March 2025. Members will develop a series of recommendations and a proposed timeline for how to best implement public financing in Multnomah County elections. The recommendations will be provided to the Board, which will have an opportunity to vote to support advancing the policy concept to the implementation stage.

Public campaign finance programs such as the City of Portland’s Small Donor Elections program seek to reduce the influence of money in politics and encourage the election of people to public office who are reflective of and accountable to all voters by leveraging public dollars to multiply small donations from local residents.

APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH  MONDAY, OCT. 28. Please contact mult.chair@multco.us with any questions.

Who is eligible to apply:

To serve on the Public Campaign Financing Implementation Advisory Committee, members must:

  • Live or work in Multnomah County. Applicants can find what district they reside in here.
  • Attend a two-hour full group meeting twice per month through at least March 31, 2025. Meetings will be from 6:30 to  8:30 pm. Participants can attend in-person or virtually.
  • Have experience working collaboratively with individuals who may hold differing opinions.

Members of the committee will be provided financial stipends for meeting attendance, and will also have access to supports to allow their full participation at their request, including, but not limited to interpretation services in their preferred language.
