County animal services teams up with local business partners to make pet adoption more convenient

September 11, 2012

At the county, one of our areas of responsibility is caring for the health, safety and welfare of our pets through Multnomah County Animals Services (MCAS). As an open-admission facility, our shelter must accept all kinds of pets, regardless of the state of their health or the likelihood that they'll be adopted.

One of MCAS's top goals is to ensure that as many pets residing in the county shelter as possible have the opportunity to be adopted into loving homes. In the pursuit of this goal, we've identified a major obstacle: the remote location of the county's animal shelter in Troutdale.

To address this issue and increase cat adoption rates (cats currently account for about 72 percent of our shelter's animal population) MCAS has teamed up with the following Portland-based, permanent, cat adoption outreach sites:

  1. Personal Beast, 8119 S.E. Stark
  2. Sellwood Pet Supply, 8334 S.E. 17th Ave.
  3. Natural Pet Food Solutions, 7639 S.E. Milwaukie Ave.
  4. Pets on Broadway, 2762 N.E. Broadway

Through this new partnership, potential pet parents will have the opportunity to adopt MCAS shelter cats directly from these businesses without having to make a trip out to Troutdale. As part of the deal, adoption outreach partners will house, feed, care and adopt out pets in exchange for retention of adoption fees. Multnomah County will keep animal licensing fees.

If you're interested in bringing a new furry friend into your family, you can browse a list of adoptable pets at www.multcopets.us; visit the county shelter at 1700 W. Columbia River Hwy in Troutdale; or stop by one of the four adoption outreach sites during their respective business hours.
