January 18, 2013

With the temperature rapidly dropping, Multnomah County, 211info, the City of Portland and a number of area nonprofits have teamed up to provide a network of shelters for people experiencing homelessness in our region.

This network includes overnight shelters and day shelters, as well as sites that cater to families, single men, single women, domestic violence survivors and youth ages 9 through 23. In addition to a warm place to stay, some shelters also offer services including meals and housing placement assistance.

To get connected with the appropriate site, people seeking shelter are encouraged to contact to 211 directly by visiting 211info.org or dialing 2-1-1 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m.- 10 p.m., with extended hours during severe weather.

In the case of a Severe Weather Notice (when temperatures fall below 25 degrees Fahrenheit for several consecutive nights), call 211 for up-to-date information. If you want to donate or volunteer at a local winter shelter, call 211 to find out how.
