April 2022 saw record amounts of snow fall in parts of Multnomah County. It pales in comparison to the 41 inches that dumped in January 1950. This photograph shows Latourell Falls during the winter of 1949-50.

The falls and the nearby town trace their names to early settler Joseph “French” Latourell. According to local sources, Latourell kept busy. It is said that he ran a mercantile, served as a postmaster, operated a fish wheel, and worked as a boatman. He and his wife, Grace Ough, raised eight children here, one of whom was Clara Latourell Larsson, Troutdale’s first woman mayor. The Latourells’ house still stands near the picnic area of Guy W. Talbot State Park.
