Project Information
- Location: Broadway Bridge lift spans
- Schedule: 2025-6
- Estimated Cost: $21.8m
- Funding Source: County funds for design; 90% federal and 10% county for construction
Project Description
The Broadway’s lift span deck was made of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) structural members. The existing FRP decking on the movable spans was retaining water and the structural beams were beginning to fail, resulting in the need for extensive temporary repairs by county maintenance. The deck and supporting beams are being replaced with concrete-filled steel. This is the same type of deck that can currently be seen on the Morrison Bridge.
During construction, the streetcar tracks are being removed and replaced. There will be no change in streetcar operations once the project is complete.
Schedule
One more weekend closure is planned for May 2-3.
The bridge will be closed overnight from April 27-May 8 to paint the counterweights that allow the deck to open.
Traffic Impacts
During the May 2-3 closure, the bridge will be closed to all motorized traffic. Sidewalks will remain open for cyclists and pedestrians.
During overnight closures from April 27-May 8, the bridge will be closed to all motorized traffic between 8pm and 5am. Sidewalks will remain open for cyclists and pedestrians.
Streetcar Service
The streetcar is providing modified service during the closures:
The streetcar is serving the east side via the Tilikum Crossing, turning around on either end of the Broadway Bridge.
A and B loop streetcars are operating as one line, going both directions through downtown and along the central east side.
The stop at N.W. 9th and Lovejoy is closed for the duration of the project.
Bus Service
TriMet’s Line 17-Holgate/Broadway has moved to a new route that will use the Steel Bridge instead. Check trimet.org/alerts for the latest service information.
