At the start of a severe weather activation, community members on our contact list (those who have previously volunteered, registered for an info session or training, or submitted their interest in volunteering) will be notified of available shifts. Multnomah County will also spread the word through the press, social media and through our seasonal webpages, Help for When It’s Hot and Care for When It’s Cold.

Before you sign up for a shift, we suggest you review this list of helpful considerations and tips.

  1. When signing up for shifts, be sure to allow at least 10 hours of rest for every 24-hour period: time during which you are not scheduled to work either for the activation or at your regularly scheduled shift. 
  2. Due to the dynamic nature of severe weather events, shifts may be canceled at any time. We will make every effort to communicate changes to your shift in a timely manner.
  3. Once you sign up, please watch your email and keep your phone close for additional information. 
  4. If you are feeling sick, do not sign up or report onsite for your shift. Refer to your work assignment (included in your shift confirmation email) for how to notify schedule coordinators that you are unable to come in.
  5. Masks will be available for all staff and guests who wish to use them. Other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hand sanitizer and a variety of gloves will also be available for your use.
  6. Ensure you are able to travel to your shift by having your vehicle ready for severe weather (heat or cold), or by checking for TriMet service alerts if you use public transportation. (You can also sign up to receive TriMet service updates by email or text message.)
  7. Make sure your family or household is ready for inclement weather, and for your absence.
